Rewriting the narrative on bi+ people and non-nuclear families

WHO WE ARE

Belonging impacts every part of our lives: our health, our economic opportunity, our safety, and our ability to thrive. Yet bi+ people and non-nuclear families continue to face exclusion in the stories, institutions, and policies that shape our world. Rewrite the BiLine's growing movement is working to change that.

THE PROBLEM

Although bi+ people make up the majority of the LGBTQ+ community, the bi+ community is consistently overlooked in film, television and the media. When bi+ people are portrayed, the characters are often harmful tropes. While this is starting to change, the stigma bi+ people and non-nuclear families have faced on screen has contributed to discrimination and erasure off screen.

OUR SOLUTION

It is time that we rise up and demand a new bi+ narrative, a narrative written by and for bi+ people that will help us elevate our unique community and issues. We need film, television, theatre, and traditional news outlets to help us rewrite the bi line so that we can rewrite the budget line and get the bi+ community the resources it deserves.

WHAT WE DO

Rewrite the BiLine creates film, television, and media narratives that reshape cultural norms and drive policy change to advance health equity, economic opportunity, and civil rights for bi+ people and non-nuclear families.

NEW TOOL FOR STORYTELLERS

Our report, guide, and assessment tool help creators in entertainment develop more authentic, visible bi+ characters and stories.

Mapping Bi+ News Coverage

We found that less than 7% of LGBTQ+ news coverage in the last 30 years is of bi+ people and issues.  We are working to change that through research and our fellowship.
